Everyone loves a good story, and the Auburn Winter Storytelling Fest brought seven professional storytellers to the stage this month, including our Director of Education, Alicia M. Retes in the evening. She respectfully acknowledged the Maidu and Southern Sierra Miwuk people of the area and promoted MAI before telling a Coast Miwok story of Kulupi, a hummingbird. After Coyote created people, they were very cold and asked Kulupi to bring them fire from the sun, taking her on a perilous journey. Alicia’s highly animated tale was well received by an audience of some 250 people. For this photo we credit Phillip Jaques, and for her expression we credit the Coyote.
