A Vanishing Race: The 150th Birthday of Edward S. Curtis

Extended through January 2019

You told us. We listened.

If you haven’t had a chance to see the Edward S. Curtis exhibit, you now have a second chance. MAI's Curtis exhibit has been so well received, that we have decided to extend its run time into early 2019. Come and enjoy MAI’s collection of Curtis prints for the first time or see it again and marvel at this window into the past.

If you haven’t had a chance to see the Edward Curtis exhibit, you now have a second chance. A Vanishing Race celebrates the 150th birthday of photographer Edward S. Curtis. Curtis realized that Indigenous cultures of the rapidly developing United States were under attack by white encroachment and an uncaring US Government. Curtis sought to document these cultures in photographs and wax recordings.

A Vanishing Race showcases Curtis' preservation efforts while pointing out his shortcoming in omitting how Indigenous tribes sought to adapt to life in the United States and his perpetration of the idea of the 'Noble Savage.'

MAI's visiting intern, Amelia Martinez spearheaded the exhibit which is comprised of 12 photographs from the Museum's personal collection.

MAI’s is happy to announce that our first #GivingTuesday raised $325 in donations! This was short of our $500 goal, but regardless, we consider our efforts a success.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in our inaugural #GivingTuesday with either a donation or by helping to spread the word. Without community support like yours, MAI wouldn’t be able to deliver our educational programs or exhibits.

If you had planned on donating on #GivingTuesday but missed it, it’s not too late. Head on over to our donation page on our website to show your support.
