MAI offers educational programming that informs youth about the diversity of American Indian people and their cultures. We will discuss how tribes related with their Natural world precolonization as well as how American Indians adapted and survived through colonization, and how they are continuing to thrive and stay connected to their traditional ways today. We will learn about the local tribal communities in the Bay Area, particularly about the Coast Miwok communities that inhabit Marin. We will walk the site of Miwok Park to get a better understanding of how life was for the tribes that lived in the area before settlers came. We will focus on how the tribes skillfully managed, tended and cultivated the natural resources around them for food, housing, clothing, and other needs for daily life. On our walk we will look at maps, examples of tools, our onsite reconstructed Miwok kotchas, and the surrounding local nature. Students will walk away with a better understanding of the history of this country from a Native perspective and gain an understanding of the beauty and diversity of American Indian people.
